9 Basic Facts about Data and Why Data Storage is Important.
Data is all we own. We don’t really have much actual paper anymore. Okay, let me back up. We should have much LESS paper than we did twenty years ago. Our access to information, or “data” as called in the digital world, is all we own. Imagine how much information most of us have in our email on our smartphones. This type of filing system would have a dozen file cabinets full and a full-time person to file the information away.
Here are 9 basic fact about data:
- A “byte” is 8 bits of data, which is not to be confused with a “nibble”, which is 4 bits.
- A “bit” is the single structure of storage and is either considered a 1 or a 0 by the logic. So all of the data we store is in bits, but we say “bytes” to help keep this easier to scale up.
- Mega is one million. Megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes
- Giga is one billion. Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes
- Tera is one trillion. Terabyte = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes
- A music CD is no more than 700MB or 700 million bytes or 700,000,000 bytes.
- A DVD is used for video and is 4.7GB or 4.7 billion bytes or 4,700,000,000 bytes.
- A Blu-ray disc, which is the preferred movie format, is up to 50GB or 50,000,000,000 bytes.
- Standard hard drive size for workstations is 500GB or 500,000,000,000 bytes.
How much data do you think YouTube has?
YouTube alone has above 100 million terabytes of data. That’s 2,476,921,741 DVDs.
Ok, why does this matter?
Data Storage=Limited/Reduced Downtime
It doesn’t matter how much data you have….
…. What matters is how much data you protect.
If YouTube went offline for a day you could still run your business. However, the data shows YouTube was down for less than 2 hours in all of 2015. Can you say the same?
